In a community in southern Nigeria, Mgbusi are tribal marks that were formerly meant to provide protection. However, since their original purpose has been fulfilled, these marks have turned into beauties, leaving the minority’s perception of them as scars on their indigenous people. The majority of its natives, who had previously been ashamed of these marks, now saw them as a source of pride and beauty rather than as a barrier
In narrating this story, I used these scars as beauty marks and design elements on boubou dresses. Now, I’m growing the brand’s product line to include not only boubous but also hoodies, throw pillow covers, bags, and other items that are available on the brand’s website. Like the scar that has come to symbolize a culture, I want the products to be seen as a source of pride.
